Elementary and Middle School Programs

Booking Request Form

Elementary and Middle school programs emphasize the importance insects and invertebrates have in our environment with a strong emphasis of respect and conservation.  All presentations are interactive, involve student classroom participation and show live bugs to students.

In-House Programs at The Bug Lab

We offer programs on Bug Diversity (program covers all the bugs in our museum) or Arachnids (program focuses on spiders, scorpions, whipscorpions, and related animals in our museum).

Group presentation (30 minutes) Students are seated in our presentation area and receive a presentation about some of the bugs in the museum, have an opportunity to hold a bug and learn about entomology.

Independent exercise (20 minutes) Your class becomes Junior Entomologists! Observe the bugs in their habitats, and record ‘data’ on observation sheets just like scientists.  Bug Lab staff assists your class with their observation sheets.  Sheets are age appropriate.

Wrap Up (15 minutes) We seat the students again and students have an opportunity to ask additional questions.

Make a day of it in New Westminster!  Ask us about additional educational centres in New Westminster within walking distance from The Bug Lab.

The Quick and the Camouflaged $139 for 24 students, $5.75 thereafter

Bugs are everywhere but many people really don’t notice these little critters.  Learn about the various ways insects blend in with their surroundings and live right among us.  View some amazing live bugs too.

Arachnids $139 for 24 students, $5.75 thereafter

Arachnids are the group of bugs that include spiders, mites and scorpions, among others.  Learn about these various types of bugs, the differences between them, where you find them, what the biggest and the smallest, the most elusive and you will have to decide what is the coolest.

Outdoor Entomologist Adventure - $169 for 24 students, $5.75 thereafter

Ever wonder how an entomologist does fieldwork?  Learn about some of the techniques an entomologist uses to learn about bugs in an ecosystem, make a unique bug catching instrument, learn about the diversity of insects in our parks, gardens, backyards and school grounds, go on a bug scavenger hunt and learn how to collect data!  You never know…you may want to become an entomologist when you grow up!

Outdoor Field Biologist - $169 for 24 students, $5.75 thereafter

Ever wonder how biologists learn those amazing facts about plants and animals? During this two-hour program, students learn about some of the various jobs and techniques a field biologist would employ while working in nature.  Bird counts, bug catching, plant plots, pitfall traps, habitat and conservation, field vests, data collection and tree measurements.  Learn a bit of everything and have a lot of fun while doing it.  You never know…you may want to become a biologist when you grow up!
