Children's Presentations
Bugs
and Insects
Preschool bug programs are specifically designed for 3 – 5 year old
children and focus on teaching awareness and respect for bugs, learning
the difference between types of bugs, and local bugs. Kids make a bug
catcher and learn how to catch bugs (like they might catch them in their
own home).
Amazing Bugs
Learn about insect
diversity, the differences between insects and other bugs, the various
ways that insects protect themselves and view some impressive live bugs
too. This presentation is suitable for ages 6 – 12.
The
Quick and the Camouflaged
Bugs are everywhere but many people really don’t notice these little
critters. Learn about the various ways insects blend in with their
surroundings and live right among us. View some amazing live bugs too.
This presentation is suitable for ages 6 – 12.
Arachnids
Arachnids are the group of bugs that include spiders, mites and
scorpions, among others. Learn about these various types of bugs, the
differences between them, where you find them, what the biggest and the
smallest, the most elusive and you will have to decide what is
the coolest. This presentation is suitable for ages 6 – 12.
Outdoor Entomologist Adventure
Ever wonder how an entomologist does fieldwork? Learn about some of the
techniques an entomologist uses to learn about bugs in an ecosystem,
make a unique bug catching instrument, learn about the diversity of
insects in our parks, gardens, backyards and school grounds, go on a bug
scavenger hunt and learn how to collect data! You never know…you may
want to become an entomologist when you grow up! This presentation is
suitable for ages 6 – 12.
Outdoor Field Biologist
Ever wonder how biologists learn those amazing facts about plants and
animals? During this two-hour program, students learn about some of
the various jobs and techniques a field biologist would employ while
working in nature. Bird counts, bug catching, plant plots, pitfall
traps, habitat and conservation, field vests, data collection and tree
measurements. Learn a bit of everything and have a lot of fun while
doing it. You never know…you may want to become a biologist when you
grow up! This presentation is suitable for ages 6 – 12.
Adult Programs
Garden Bugs
It’s simply
not true that the only good bug is a dead bug! Bugs are what make your
garden grow. Whether your garden consists of a few houseplants or a
sprawling country estate, encouraging beneficial insect populations will
enrich your garden more than you think. Learn about the various bugs in
your garden, how to encourage the good ones and discourage others from
eating your prized flowers.
There's a bug in my home!
Ants, cockroaches,
fleas, silverfish, spiders, bed bugs, lice and woodbugs! Is my house
infested? Not many people like to see bugs in their home and it is
understandable why some kinds of bugs are not wanted. Learn about the
good bugs and the not so good bugs that are often found in your home.
Show me the Bugs!
Everyone is
interested about bugs. Learn some insect facts, local insect lore,
entomological news and view some impressive insects too. This
presentation is for people who are curious about bugs and would like to
know more.
BC’s Rare and Endangered Species
British Columbia is home to hundreds of rare and endangered species.
The Vancouver Island Marmot lives nowhere else in the world but a few
small pockets of habitat on Vancouver Island. The Pacific Giant
Salamander lives only in the Chilliwack River area and can reach up to
30 cm long! Great Blue Herons, red-legged frogs, the Johnson’s
Hairstreak butterfly, the Vivid Dancer dragonfly, and a true bug found
only on select plants in near Osoyoos. Learn about these species and
ecosystems and the many factors involved in conservation biology.
