Ongoing Programs

Thinking of offering weekly nature programs at your school, library, community centre or after-school program? The Bug Lab has exciting and interactive programs that offer crafts, outdoor and indoor activities. We will visit your facility on a weekly basis and present a new topic every week!

Some of our topics include the following, as well as our In-House Entomologist Program

Snails, Slugs and Slimy Things

Slime is one of the coolest things in nature and many animals make slime to help them survive in nature.  Go on a slimy critter scavenger hunt, make slime, learn about the different kinds of slime and ultimately have a new found respect for those slimy critters in nature.

Freshwater Ecosystems
Freshwater ecosystems are home to an abundance of creatures that are only a magnifying glass away.  Learn about aquatic insects and vertebrates, lifecycles of these animals, what they eat, observe some unique micro-organisms and learn more about the miniature world in the roadside rainwater ditch!

Spidermania
Learn about spider diversity, tarantulas, local spiders, spider life cycles, webs, spider look-alikes, spider camouflage, spider venom and all round spider life!

Wildlife Trees
Learn about the diversity of plants and animals that use trees for their home.  Bats, bugs, birds, epiphytes, mosses, plants, spiders, squirrels and more!  Learn how to recognize the different types of animal use on a tree, the succession of a wildlife tree and why disease-ridden, broken-topped and snag trees are so important for forest wildlife.

Animal Sign
Sign refers to evidence that an animal has been somewhere and since left.  Biologists often measure animal activity by the amount of sign that they find.  Learn how to recognize the sign of animals that live in your own backyard: woodpecker holes, feathers, bug nests, paw prints, chew marks, sawdust, fur and burrows can all identify an animal right to the species.   Learn how to do this and more!

Forest Ecosystems
Forests are home to thousands and thousands of plants and animals.  Learn about BC’s forests and their wildlife, how a forest grows and changes, the forest industry in BC and how a forest is managed for timber and wildlife, rare species, tourism and more!

Botanical Bonanza

Learn about the botanical diversity in our own ecosystems.  Become a botanist for a day!  This program teaches about plants and the everyday products derived from plants, learn about some of BC’s plants, plant facts, herbariums and how to estimate plant diversity.

Other Program Topics

There are new topics continually being developed and added to our list of programs.  If there is a biological topic that interests you, but is not listed above contact us and perhaps we can coordinate a custom program.
