On-the-Road High School Programs

High school presentations are detailed, fact filled and focus on ecology and the natural world, conservation, rare species and species interactions. These topics are combined in a seminar that also gives students ideas about careers in the natural sciences. All presentations are interactive, involve student classroom participation and show live bugs to students. We bring displays, preserved specimens, a live scorpion and live tarantula to your classroom (although we do not allow students to hold these animals).

We offer three different programs, although if there is a biological topic that interests you but is not listed, give us a call and we will develop a unique program for your class.

Presentation Topics

  1. Bug Diversity: Insects and spiders are an integral part of our environment and without these animals our world would not function for very long. Learn about a variety of arthropods from British Columbia and elsewhere, ecological interactions between insects, their habitats and ecosystems and some of the latest scientific findings in entomology.
  2. Arachnids: Arachnids are the group of bugs that include spiders, mites and scorpions, among others. Learn about these various types of bugs, the differnces between them, where you find them, what the biggest and the smallest, the most elusive, and you will have to decide what is the coolest.
  3. Outdoor Entomologist/Biologist: Ever wonder how an entomologist does fieldwork? During this outdoor presentation, learn about some of the techniques an entomologist uses to gain information about bugs in an ecosystem, make a few unique bug catching instruments, learn about the diversity of insects in our parks, gardens, backyards and school grounds, go on a bug hunt and learn how to collect data. You never know, you may want to become an entomologist when you grow up! This program is 1.5 hours and costs an additional $42 ($181 total).
