Workshops for Educators

The Bug Lab offers workshops for educators booked by their staff or school professional development coordinator, on a day that suits your staff. The Bug Lab staff comes to your school to deliver the teacher workshop or can organize a separate location (e.g. conference room, community centre, etc.) for the workshop. These workshops are for adults.

Workshop Sessions (choose three of these options for your workshop day) Workshop sessions can be tailored to the age group of your students.

  1. The Junior Entomologist - inspire your students to become Junior Entomologists.  This workshop shows teachers the various methods for catching and observing insects, linking concepts such as habitat, body parts and adaptations, protection and camouflage.
  2. Cultural Entomology - insects influence our lives more than you know.  This workshop is an overview of some of the cultural aspects of entomology, both ancient and modern, and includes some stories, crafts and ideas.
  3. Arachnids - this group of invertebrates are some of the most fascinating animals.  This workshop introduces teachers to spiders, scorpions, tarantulas, whipscorpions, sun spiders, and other arachnids.
  4. The Literary Bug - this workshop links literature with entomology, including books, stories and ways to develop non-fiction writing skills in students.
  5. Beetles - this workshop introduces students to the beetle diversity from the tropical to temperate climates
  6. Pollinators - this workshop outlines teaching concepts for pollination services and the important role insects play in relation to plants.
  7. Bugs in the Classroom - this workshop details the arthropods that are suitable for classroom display and as pets, including those that are legal and illegal in Canada.
